The Still, Small Voice of Love

많은 소리들이 우리의 주의를 요구합니다.
"당신이 좋은 사람이라는 것을 증명해 봐."
하고 말하는 소리가 있습니다.

"자기 스스로 부끄러운 줄 알아야지"
라고 다른 소리가 말합니다.

어떤 소리는 또한 "너를 진정으로 걱정해 줄 사람은 아무도 없어."
라고 말하기도 하고,
또 어떤 소리는 "성공도 하고 인기도 끌고 권력도 잡아야만 해"
하고 이야기 합니다.

그러나 이러한 시끄러운 소리들에 파묻힌 작고 세미한 소리가 있습니다.
"너는 내가 사랑하는 사람이야... 나의 은총이 네게 있어."

이 소리야말로 우리가 귀기울여 들어야 할 소리입니다.
그러나 이 소리를 듣기 위해서는 특별한 노력,
즉 고독과 침묵 그리고 듣고자 하는 강한 의지가 필요합니다.

이것이 바로 기도입니다.
기도는 우리들을 "나의 사랑하는 자여" 하고
부르시는 소리를 듣는 것입니다.

Many voices ask for our attention.
There is a voice that says, "Prove that you are a good person."
Another voice says, "You'd better be ashamed of yourself."
There also is a voice that says, "Nobody really cares about you,"
and one that says, "Be sure to become successful, popular, and powerful."

But underneath all these often very noisy voices is a still, small voice that says,
"You are my Beloved, my favor rests on you."

That's the voice we need most of all to hear.
To hear that voice, however, requires special effort; it requires solitude, silence,
and a strong determination to listen.

That's what prayer is. It is listening to the voice that calls us "my Beloved."
